Clutter... We've all been there.
Our solution to the problem... organize the clutter.
That's the thing, clutter is clutter. Organizing your clutter is a good place to start and in my opinion will only help a little. It will for sure make your space look nicer and it might put you in a better mood, at least for a little while. But, what happens when the clutter creeps back out of it's nice little assigned home? Your space looks less than desired and this has negative affects on your mood and your life overall. It was only for fleeting moment that things were going good. But, I could argue the fact that they were ever really good in the first place. To me, clutter is clutter, whether it's out in the open or neatly tucked away. When you open a drawer or a cabinet or perhaps your dresser or closet... neatly organized, but overwhelming emotions are taking place that you may not be aware of.
The key to a peaceful, more simple, abundant life is actually in the discarding of the clutter. Not in the buying pretty little baskets that put you in financial strain or whatever you can find already around the house in order to save from buying the pretty little baskets. It's not in the totes that you have filled up with things that you think you may use one day and so stash them away in the garage or attic.
Why am I saying all this? Because, I've been there and I'm still in the discarding phase. I think I'll be here for awhile, because the more I discard and the more I recognize the fuller and more simple life is, the more I want to get rid of stuff. I have already 'downsized' our things so much that still I look at things and see too much.
If your like me, you'll start to notice that an empty drawer or cabinet creates a sense of control in your life, it creates a greater confidence and the life issues that I once worried about begin to disappear as you learn to let go.
The old excuses that you once used like, "I don't have time" seem to move out without notice and you now have time to spend on things that you know you should do or that are important to you.
That's one thing I'm trying to get used to. The house is always clean bc I have time to deep clean my house every Tuesday (yes, I put my house on the schedule) and it only takes me about 2 hours and that time is getting less and less (which I wrote about here). So I've found that I have more time to spend on other things and to focus on them, but this is all new for me and sometimes I find myself not knowing what to do with myself. I believe this is a good problem to have and I'm learning ways to use this time. It's just creating new habits.
Just like with anything... like they say, anything worth having takes time... It will take some hard work, dedication and time to get your space clutter free.
I recommend starting with some journaling exercises. You need to have a clear 'WHY' on what you want out of your home, office, bedroom, etc... and how you want each room to serve you. This is your project and I'm not telling you that there is a one size fits all. So if you want to do room by room or by category or something else... that's up to you; you might even find that this also evolves. The important thing is to get started and don't skip the journaling process. You 'Why' will become your motivator to keep going. The process is where you find change begin to happen on the inside of you. That's the key to lasting transformation. Because without it, what good is having a tidy home if nothing inside you changes. You will always be fighting an internal battle. You may even think that the process doesn't work... Yep, been there too!
Have you ever seen the show Hoarders? It's great that they come in and clean up for them and even talk them into letting go of some of there stuff, but I also wonder how much of it sticks when a year, or even months go by.
This has to be important to you, and you have to do the work yourself. This leads you into a more simplified, happy life. If I was to come in and coach you on these issues, the process would look like this. Journaling homework and lots of it. I will teach you how to recognize the negative patterns that your surroundings have on your mental wellness. We would talk about what you desire your home to do for you and discuss solutions to make it obey. You will keep track of your emotions and habits, either good and bad and also learn to be aware of the negative and the positive that your surroundings are speaking to you everyday.
Overtime, you'll begin to see what affect this has on you mentally, physically, and spiritually. As you grow you'll be more inclined to keep going.
I hope this lights a fire in you and starts the process within your mind to make some hard, yet very rewarding changes in removing the clutter from your life vs. just organizing it.
It is my desire to see you become free from the chains of the self-imposed prisons we have unconsciously put ourselves in concerning our surroundings within our home.
A bonus to all of this... it's not just about our homes, although we spend most of our time there, this process spills over into all areas of our life. It becomes a lifestyle and not just an event. Your health, relationships, work life, contributions in the community, and hobbies will all benefit for the better.
